Michael Penketh

Why university?

I wanted to deepen my knowledge and education in sport and physical activity, with the goal of transitioning into a career in this field. Teesside was the perfect option for me as it's local – being close to my family was an important factor in my decision. I have broader ambitions to continue my studies by completing a master's and eventually a PhD.

Favourite part about your course?

It really focuses in on research and encourages you to become actively involved in your chosen subject. It has been so inspiring that I’m now pursuing a research masters and building a career in physical activity research. The skills and experience I’ve gained have given me the confidence to take this next step and explore the field further.

Would you recommend your course?

Yes, the lecturers have a wide range of industry-related work experience and links with sport teams and clubs which has helped me broaden my skill set and meet potential employers.

How has Teesside helped you secure work experience?

I secured an internal placement in the Health and Wellness Centre, and Sport Performance Centre. While I found my own external opportunities, Teesside provided valuable support in developing my skills and preparing me for these roles. These experiences have been incredibly beneficial to apply my learning in real-world settings, and build the expertise needed for my future career in the field.
Through Unitemps and the University's support, I also became a student ambassador, which provided me with paid flexible work alongside my studies. This helped me develop time management and organisational skills, and gain hands-on experience.

Any advice for students considering Teesside?
