Award recognition for innovation in engaging students

Dr Helen Tidy and Dr Mark Butler won a prestigious Pearson HE Innovate Award for an imaginative project which encourages students' creativity. Their project used electronic storytelling to enhance assessments, giving students an alternative to a word-processed document or a series of presentation slides to evidence their learning.

Teesside academics excel in national teaching and learning awards

The Sports Injury Clinic team, from the School of Health & Life Sciences, received an Advance HE Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE). The award recognised the academic team's innovative approach to engaging students in developing the clinic and enabling them to help shape their learning outcomes.

Nursing student wins prestigious care award

Trainee nursing associate Richard Stevenson has been recognised with the Care Practitioner of the Year award from The Maria Mallaband Care Group for his work as Care Practitioner and Head of the Dementia Unit at Yohden Care Complex in Hartlepool. The award celebrates Richard's excellence in his field

Health expert challenges junk food bus shelter adverts

Researchers from Teesside and Liverpool universities are calling for tighter controls on bus shelter advertising to protect public health. Fuse Associate Director Professor Amelia Lake says new rules about how junk food is promoted to children on television and online, should be extended to bus shelters too.

Research could herald new treatments for childhood cancer

Ground-breaking research by Teesside academics could lead to new approaches in treating aggressive childhood cancers. The team led by Professor Vikki Rand have been studying the genetics of aggressive lymphoma and have discovered a link between a specific gene and the survival rate of children with the disease.

New research proves diet can put Type 2 diabetes into remission

Professor of Health Sciences Alan Batterham, from the School of Health & Life Sciences, is part of a team of researchers who published a study showing that people can effectively control their Type 2 diabetes through diet, and that pharmacists are well positioned to supervise the transition.

Dr Samantha Gooneratne was nominated for a Team Teesside Star Award 2020-2021

Sam's innovations using Microsoft Teams during the pandemic helped the engineering department push boundaries and be creative in the delivery of our learning and teaching, as well in our marketing and recruitment campaigns which would have been otherwise rather complicated under COVID-19 restrictions.

Ada takes the helm of Teesside University's governing body

Ada Burns has become the first woman chair of our University's Board of Governors. Ada, who has been a Teesside University board member since 2019, served as Chief Executive of Darlington Borough Council for thirteen years, and she is currently a Non-Executive Director of the South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Duo reflect on their role in helping to create an inclusive campus

Dominic Dunn and Ang Ramage have played a key role in helping to ensure that Teesside University continues to be a welcoming and inclusive place for everyone across our campus community.

Making TU Proud

Dominic Dunn and Angela Ramage are the co-chairs of our Teesside University LGBT+ Focus Group. They have led the development of our TU Proud campaign which celebrates and supports our LGBT+ colleagues and students, with the aim of creating an inclusive environment where everyone can be their genuine self.

Teesside University student uses his art to inspire and support others

Teesside student Ben James has published a comic book which has helped him with his own experiences as a trans person and provides support and advice to others.

Gemma's championing positive mental heath

Gemma Crossen is a volunteer Teesside University Mental Health Champion and helps colleagues talk openly about their mental health and to seek help when they need it. She says: 'We're not counsellors, we just want to start a conversation and signpost people to the help they might need.'

University of the Year for Social Inclusion

We were named University of the Year for Social Inclusion in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide for our work to embrace social mobility and encourage greater participation from underrepresented groups.

Empowering the next generation of women in engineering

Dr Tannaz Pak, from the School of Computing, Engineering & Digital Technologies, gave a talk at the North East Heroes - Inspiring Tomorrow's Engineers event. The aim was to encourage more women to pursue careers in STEM subjects by showcasing the work of leading female engineers.

Teesside pain expert spearheads national campaign

Professor Cormac Ryan, from the School of Health & Life Sciences, is a community pain champion for the Flippin Pain campaign which aims to change how people think about, talk about, and treat persistent pain. Professor Ryan takes part in online sessions on the subject for audiences across the country.
