The PROGRESS project addresses critical gaps in global trade by integrating cutting-edge technologies like 5G, IoT, geofencing, and artificial intelligence (AI) to ensure the physical assurance of goods within supply chains. Through innovative solutions, it aims to create a secure, efficient, and transparent global trade network.

Challenge

As global trade systems embrace digitalisation, ensuring the physical assurance of consignments remains a critical challenge. Traditional practices lack the transparency, security, and efficiency required in modern trade, especially in complex cross-border transactions.

Solution

Teesside University, in collaboration with iC4DTI and Digital Catapult, is developing a prototype system to integrate physical and digital assurance technologies. Key innovations include:

  • 5G connectivity: real-time, high-speed data transmission for tracking and monitoring goods.
  • IoT and geofencing: sensors embedded within consignments to track location, condition, and status while triggering alerts when goods enter or exit designated zones.
  • Artificial intelligence: advanced analytics to process supply chain data, optimise trade routes, and reduce risks.

The technologies are being tested at Teesside International Airport to evaluate their real-world application and impact on trade systems.

Impact

  • Enhanced transparency: real-time data ensures supply chain integrity, reducing disputes and inefficiencies.
  • Improved efficiency: automated processes and data-driven insights cut delays and lower costs.
  • Scalable solutions: a foundation for future innovations adaptable to different regions and industries.

This project strengthens the UK’s position as a leader in digital trade innovation while redefining global supply chain management.

PROGRESS represents a bold step forward in bridging the gap between the physical and digital dimensions of trade. By integrating advanced technologies like 5G, IoT, and AI, we are creating a blueprint for a more secure, efficient, and transparent global trade ecosystem.
